Talk about casting a wide net. Sony Pictures Entertainment today launched Face of the Fan (“Turning today’s fans into tomorrow’s stars”), an online open casting call they will utilize to cast “pivotal” parts in upcoming feature films. First up, they are seeking “someone to play a pivotal role as a female teenager in the upcoming sequel for the Underworld franchise”. After inputting their age (potential candidates must be 18 or older), applicants are instructed to download a script for a monologue they must record themselves acting on tape and send in. With Kate Beckinsale attached to the project, it remains to be seen how “pivotal” the role really is and there’s obviously no guarantee they won’t end up casting an established actor in the end, but it’s certainly an exciting prospect for countless struggling actors and actresses who aren’t even given a chance in most instances because they don’t have an agent or an agent who’s not well-connected enough.
